Firefighters have a new tool to help plan for conditions with the potential for extreme fire behavior. The Offshore Flow Severity Index (OFSI) predicts severity of Santa Ana weather events as much as six days in advance. The tool relates combined humidity and winds to historical wildfire occurrence to produce predictions of expected fire behavior.
Tom Wordell, a Fire Analyst with the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC), developed the tool last year.
